Candy Corn
Candy corn is a type of candy that's in the shape of a kernel of corn. It represents real corn, which is harvested in autumn.
This Halloween candy staple was first invented in the late 1800s by George Renninger, of the Wunderle Candy Company. Today, you can find lots of variations, but the traditional flavor remains the most popular.
While candy corn may not be everyone's favorite candy, lots of people love using the image as a decoration for fall and Halloween. It's cute and festive!
They're one of my favorite symbols of the season, which is why I couldn't wait to make these candy corn pots.
Homemade Candy Corn Craft
This project features the symbol of one of Halloween's most iconic candies, the candy corn. Aside from waiting for paint to dry, this project will take your tweens less than 30 minutes to make. You can find many of the supplies at the Dollar Store, so it's also an inexpensive craft.
Using three colors of acrylic paint, you'll add color to the clay pots to create the candy corn image. The addition of googly eyes, pink cheeks, and a bow turn this into a charming piece of décor.

Candy Corn Customization
While there's not much you can change up if you want to keep the iconic candy corn look, there are a couple of things you can do to make this project your own.
- Let kids personalize their candy corn by choosing their own ribbon for the bow. You can see some fabulous Halloween-themed ribbon below that would look amazing.
- Use different sizes of clay pots to make larger or smaller candy corn decorations.
- Your kids can ditch the traditional candy corn colors and choose their own paint colors for the different sections.
Materials for the DIY Candy Corn
Here are some supplies you'll need for the candy corn project.
- 2.5″ Clay Pots and 3 – 3.5″ Terracotta Pots
- Acrylic Paint – Orange, Yellow, and White
- Black and White Check 3/8″ Grosgrain ribbon
- Googly Eyes

The autumn season and Halloween are the perfect time to work on some DIY projects. They help get you into the holiday mood and make ideal decorations. Tweens will get a kick out of creating their own candy corn companions.
Clay Pot Candy Corn Craft
Are you ready to make the craft? Here are step-by-step instructions.
Materials
- Clay Pots – 3 to 3.5" in diameter
- Clay Pots – 2.5" in diameter
- Acrylic Craft Paint – White, Orange, Yellow, Pink
- Wiggle Eyes
- Ribbon, Black and White Gingham
Tools
- Circle Punch or Circle Template
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Pencil with new Eraser
- Permanent Black Marker
- Scrap of White Paper
Instructions
STEP ONE
Gather all materials and then remove the packaging and labels.
STEP TWO
Basecoat the 2.5" clay pots with white acrylic craft paint.
Paint the top 2/3 of the larger clay pot with orange acrylic craft paint, and the bottom 1/3 with yellow acrylic craft paint.
Let the paint dry and then apply a second coat, if necessary.
STEP THREE
Attach the smaller white clay pot to the larger orange and yellow clay pot using a hot glue gun and glue sticks.
You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you would have to wait for it to dry.
STEP FOUR
Glue two wiggle eyes on the candy corn face using a hot glue gun.
Give them cheeks by dabbing a new pencil eraser in pink craft paint and stamping on the right and left sides, just below the eyes.
STEP FIVE
To cover up the drain hole in the smaller clay pot, punch a circle from white cardstock.
If you don't have the correct size hole punch, trace a circle using the clay post as a template with a pencil and cut out with scissors.
Attach the white cardstock to the clay pot with a hot glue gun.
STEP SIX
Draw a mouth from cheek to cheek with a permanent black marker.
STEP SEVEN
Using black and white gingham ribbon, tie two small bows.
Toward the bottom, attach one to each of the clay pots with a glue gun. Trim any long ends of ribbon with scissors.
Your family and friends will never know how quick and easy this fun Halloween décor was to create! They're the perfect size for a tiered tray display for the holiday.
